AC Ryan PlayOn! HD Mini 2 Network Media Player Review

We tested a number of videos with the PlayOn! HD Mini 2 which included 1080P, 720P and standard definition video.  All our test videos were played flawlessly over USB although we did experience some stuttering issues when connecting the unit up via a standard BT Homehub.  Switching to a gigabit router fixed these issues, though, and playing over Wireless-N was also fine.

As part of the software update, AC Ryan have added support for various social media applications.  Selecting the ‘Internet Media' option in the menu brings up twelve tiles which depict the logos of these applications.  The main supported social media platforms are Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Picasa and Flickr.  There are also a few other applications for news, weather and instant messaging.

When using these internet media applications, we would highly recommend that you attach a keyboard and mouse to the PlayOn! HD Mini 2 because inputting text via the remote control is an extremely frustrating and lengthy process.  In fact with Facebook and Twitter they are essential because they are just the standard web pages.  The Youtube application is fully integrated into the user interface, though, which lets you search with the remote control and preview videos.  Unfortunately we weren't able to access any TV on Demand videos on Youtube but most other videos seem to be present.
