Asus Transformer Pad TF300T Android Tablet Review

Overall we are left with positive impressions of the Asus Transformer Pad TF300T.  It's quite clear to us that Asus are setting themselves up to be one of the key players in the tablet market, especially since the announcement of the Google Nexus 7 tablet which is manufactured by Asus.

There are a few slightly disappointing aspects of the Transformer Pad when it's viewed in isolation, such as the cheap feeling plastic chassis and poor camera but we have to consider that this particular product is aimed at a more budget oriented user. Asus have other models in their range such the Transformer Prime which is marketed as a more premium product and doesn't suffer from these issues.

We imagine that the keyboard dock will be the major selling point of this tablet for the targeted audience.  After all, this is one area in which the Transformer Pad has a significant advantage over the iPad.  It makes it far easier to input text and subsequently boost the battery life of the tablet significantly.

While Android tablets are starting to gain traction in the market, the ecosystem still isn't as developed as Apple's and the number of tablet friendly apps available on the Google Play store is still limited.  For example, there isn't yet a Facebook app which makes use of the extra screen real estate available on the tablet and the phone version looks a bit silly when scaled up to the gigantic proportions.  That said, there are a number of useful apps pre-installed on the Tablet which help to enhance the experience.

Even though it's aimed at budget focused users, the Asus Transformer Pad TF300T is still quite expensive.  It can be yours for about £400 from Amazon which is quite expensive considering you can get an iPad for £330 these days. In fairness for the extra money you get the keyboard dock which will attract a slightly wider audience.

Pros

  • Physical keyboard.
  • Quality screen.
  • Good battery life.
  • Choice of colours.
  • Impressive performance.

Cons

  • Limited number of tablet friendly Android apps.
  • Plastic chassis feels flimsy.
  • Average camera.

KitGuru says: An impressive tablet from Asus but we expect the market to dry up a little when the Google Nexus 7 is released at less than half the price!
