Spider-Man 2’s file size is almost double that of the first game

With each passing generation the file sizes for games have increased time and time again, with the peak seeing titles such as Call of Duty Warzone take up to 250GB during the PS4 / Xbox One generation. Thankfully, due to the introduction of SSDs and compression technologies, game sizes have deflated to much more reasonable figures. Even so, the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will take up almost twice as much space as the first game.

Ahead of the game’s launch on the 20th of October, Twitter user ‘SpiderManCD’ shared an image of the limited edition Spider-Man 2 PS5 bundle, revealing that the upcoming open-world game requires at least 98GB of free space. While the final file size could vary slightly in either direction, the sequel appears to be nearly double that of the first game and even Miles Morales.

For comparison, the PS5 remaster of the first Spider-Man clocks in at around 54GB with Miles Morales coming in at 50GB. These file sizes are actually slightly smaller than their PS4 counterparts due to the use of Sony’s Kraken compression technology – meaning Spider-Man 2 is likely to be a chunker of a game.

We already know that the game world itself will be larger than both prior titles; and of course we will be able to switch between Miles and Peter at will in the open world. That said, it will be interesting to see what all these extra gigabytes are going towards.

Horizon Forbidden West saw a similar increase in file size compared to its first game – and all that extra space was certainly put to good use. Hopefully Spider-Man 2 justifies its size.
