Twitch CEO claims Grand Theft Auto VI Online will arrive “next year”

Prior to the official launch of Grand Theft Auto V back in 2013, Rockstar Games announced and detailed the game’s online mode, confirming that it would be released shortly following their single player offering. When it comes to GTA VI however, the studio has mostly remained silent on the matter. According to the CEO of Twitch however, Rockstar / Take-Two are planning to launch the much-anticipated online portion sometime “next year.”

Though leaks and rumours have persisted for years detailing some of what could be expected from Rockstar’s next take on GTA’s Online mode, the studio itself has yet to offer anything official, focusing instead on the upcoming launch of GTA VI in November – emphasising that the game is a “single-player experience.”

According to the CEO of Twitch however, GTA VI Online is real and will be arriving some time in 2027. Taking part in an interview with the publication Bloomberg (paywalled) during Tokyo Game Show, Dan Clancy revealed that he has “spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans.”

Given just how big GTA V / Online is on the platform, this does not come as a surprise. What was surprising however was the fact that Clancy then offered some insight into Rockstar’s timeline for the yet-to-be-announced GTA VI Online, stating: “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”

Though 2027 as a whole is a pretty wide range, this marks the first ‘semi-official’ confirmation of GTA VI Online’s existence. As mentioned, the original Grand Theft Auto Online arrived after V’s single-player offering – albeit only one month later.

Unlike their upcoming release however, GTA:O was officially announced by Rockstar prior to the launch of Grand Theft Auto V, making the two week wait far more bearable. Even so, the time between GTA: Online’s unveiling and its launch was still only roughly 6 weeks (compared to the almost 2 year lead up for the single-player mode).

While it can be safely assumed that GTA VI’s multiplayer portion won’t be coming any time soon, the space between its inevitable announcement and release may be shorter than expected. Either way, by the time fans are done exploring all corners of Vice City, hopefully Rockstar will be gearing up to give us something in the way of GTA Online news to look forward to.
