Valve may have sneakily given us our first look at the Source 2 engine as Dota 2’s workshop tools, in-game assets and code all appear to have been ported over to the company’s long awaited engine update in a new set of Workshop tools.
Community developers took to Reddit to point out that the command line user interface has been revamped and plenty of key in-game files have been renamed and given a 2 at the end, such as: ‘engine2.dll’, ‘vconsole2.exe’ and ‘vphysics2.dll’. However, it may be a bit too soon to get excited as Valve has hinted that further optimizations still need to be made as currently these new tools have high system requirements:
“This is a developer focused release and currently has high system requirements which means not everyone will be able to run the tools.” Valve wrote in its announcement. “We are working on expanding the number of PC configurations that will be able to run this but wanted to get the tools out there so developers could start working on their Custom Games.”
It’s important to point out that this isn’t a final engine release. Dota 2 still looks and plays the same but on the development side of things, Valve appears to be preparing the community with the tools required to start developing for its upcoming engine.
Valve has yet to confirm any of this but it is looking likely that it is preparing the community for its new engine with updated and compatible tools. However, it could still be a long time before we see the final version of the engine release.
