While we could test the Drobo 5D3 over the SS USB 3.0 port, the Thunderbolt 3/USB C port is the option to use when possible. Drobo include two of these ports on the rear of the device so you can daisy chain other devices without losing an additional port on the computer.

I don't often use the Apple platform to test DAS units, so I installed some of the latest software to be supported on MacOS Sierra. Regular KitGuru readers will realise this ‘Amorphous DiskMark' is created by the same people who offer CrystalDiskMark for the PC centric audience.
As we are using mechanical hard drives the 4K performance suffers, but it is unlikely you will be using this drive directly for that kind of work load – more for critical backups of important files. We get an early indication of overall sequential performance however- showing a 588MB/s peak in the read test and 315 MB/s in the write test. Solid results.
BlackMagic Disk Speed Test

The BlackMagic Disk Speed Test is useful and I have used it many times in the past when testing drives on Apple. We can see some really strong results in this benchmark – generating 410 MB/s write and 625MB/s read results.
AJA System Test

The AJA benchmark shows quite similar results to the Blackmagic test, hitting 402 MB/s in the write test and 556 MB/s in the read test.
Quickbench for Mac OS

Quickbench 4.0 is part of the Speedtest set of tools and its reliable software I have used for many years on the Apple platform. Write speeds are constant at around 460MB/s and read results peak at close to 700MB/s.
