ASUS ROG Strix GL12CX System (9900K & RTX 2080) Review

Performance

Performance Overview

In what comes as a surprise to absolutely no-one, a PC with both the 9900K and RTX 2080 is fast. Seriously fast. If we start with a look at the CPU performance taken on its own, we can clearly see the benefits of moving to an 8-core processor in our Cinebench score, which is around 750 points higher than the 8700K in the PCSpecialist Vulcan Pro managed.

Our 3DMark scores are also right up there, though the graphics score is a few hundred points lower than we saw from our Founders Edition card. It is not a big gap at all, and it can be easily explained by the fact that is a reference-clocked card, not a factory overclocked model like all the aftermarket cards we have tested so far.

Still, in games it thunders along at quite a pace. My personal opinion is that the RTX 2080 is best suited to a high refresh-rate 1440p monitor, and it is surely overkill for 1080p gamers. You can of course play at 4K with settings cranked right up, and you will still be pushing 50-or so FPS on average which will likely be more than enough for some – I just prefer to have FPS as high as possible for a smoother experience.

On the whole, though, this PC can really shift and while it is definitely marketed towards gamers, those who dabble in productivity workloads like video editing will find a lot to like thanks to the octacore i9-9900K.
