Steam hits new record with 27 million concurrent users

Steam has broken records in the past, seemingly surpassing its peak concurrent user count at least once a year. 2021 is no different in that regard, as Steam has surpassed its previous record, with over 27 million concurrent users over the weekend, in part thanks to the on-going Steam Autumn Sale. 

According to the data gathered by SteamDB, the previous concurrent user record was 26.9 million. However, the record for concurrent users in a game has not been beaten since April 2020. At the beginning of global lockdowns with many working from home, Steam saw over 8.1 million active players in games.

Steam once again beats its online concurrent users record with over 27 million users currently online.

It's unclear why so many users have flocked into Steam this past weekend, but a few theories make sense. While some claim the Autumn Sale is the root cause, others point to the ongoing streak of new games being released, including Halo Infinite, Battlefield 2042, Football Manager 2022, Farming Simulator 2022, Forza Horizon 5, and many more.
