Facebook files countersuit against BlackBerry for patent infringement

Back in 2016, Blackberry transformed itself from a smartphone maker into a software and licensing company. Since then, the former giant has launched lawsuits at the likes of Facebook and Snap. Things on that front have been quiet since, but this week Facebook launched its counter-attack, claiming that Blackberry infringed on some of its own tech.

In March this year, Blackberry claimed that Facebook copied some features from BBM for its own services and thus, infringed on some patents. Now, Facebook has filed a suit of its own, claiming that Blackberry infringed on several processes and technologies surrounding voice messaging.

According to Bloomberg, the 118-page long complaint claims that Blackberry has infringed on six Facebook patents in total, which range from voice messaging technology, to tracking and analysing GPS data, to how a mobile device delivers graphics.

So far, neither company has commented publicly on the new lawsuit.

KitGuru Says: Blackberry has made a few legal claims this year but it looks like it'll need to go on the defensive in this case. We could be looking at another lengthy tech feud with this one.
