Fallout New Vegas 2 referenced in Steam developer branch

Bethesda is unlikely to get around to Fallout 5 until the end of this decade, as the company plans to tackle The Elder Scrolls 6 before making a new Fallout game. This has left fans asking for Obsidian to step in and make a new spin-off similar to Fallout New Vegas. We've heard that Obsidian would be interested and curiously enough, references to New Vegas 2 have now been found on SteamDB.

SteamDB tracks backend updates to various games on Steam. On the 4th of April, a new branch was added to Fallout 4, labelled as “newvegas2”. This development branch was later deleted after fans started asking questions.

Bethesda is currently working on a ‘next gen' update for Fallout 4, which is due sometime this year. It is entirely possible that “newvegas2” didn't refer to a sequel, but rather a new version of the game with upgrades to bring it up to modern standards. That could include an upgrade to Fallout 4's version of the Creation Engine. It is also possible that this is related to Creation Club content, like a New Vegas content pack with weapons, armour and building materials.

With all of that said, fans are eager to see a New Vegas sequel and Microsoft and Bethesda would be silly to leave Fallout sitting for another seven to eight years when they have Obsidian sitting right there.

KitGuru Says: This is unlikely to be proof that a New Vegas sequel is coming, but it does show that something is happening with New Vegas behind the scenes. Hopefully we'll hear more on that before the end of the year.
