CES 2021: Supermicro debuts server-grade workstation based on Threadripper PRO

Supermicro has announced its latest workstation, the AS -5014A-TT. Based on the Threadripper Pro 3000WX series, this machine offers up to 64 cores and 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, delivering ‘the speed and features traditionally found in dual-processor workstations.'

As part of AMD's keynote at CES 2021, it was announced that the Threadripper Pro 3000WX series of processors would become open to the public in March, ending the supposed exclusivity deal with Lenovo and its ThinkStation line. Supermicro has now unveiled its first Threadripper Pro workstation, based on its Super M12SWA-TF motherboard.

With support for up to the 64-core 3995WX, providing 8 DIMMs slots for up to 2TB ECC DDR4-3200 memory and the ability to install up to 4 ‘full-height, double-width, active cooling GPUs', Supermicro says this new workstation ‘dramatically boosts productivity for demanding professional workloads found in media content creation, scientific research, visualization, deep learning (DL) and artificial intelligence (AI), virtual or augmented reality (VR/AR), and 3-D modeling with real-time simulation.'.

There's also room for four M.2 SSDs, as well as two U.2 ports, and a total of six x16 PCIe 4.0 slots. 10GbE is directly supported, as is 1GbE. Supermicro has also included IPMI access thanks to the AST2600 server management processor, while the company is keen to emphasise the strong cooling abilities of the system – with up to 7x 120mm fans support, or 2x 360mm closed-loop liquid coolers which will be available as an option purchase.
