Metro 2033 and Last Light to receive free upgrades for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S

The Metro series is a highly successful yet-underrated franchise, with the 4A Games developed first-person horror shooters successfully translating the depressing world and atmosphere of Dmitry Glukhovsky’s fictionalised post-apocalyptic Russia into video game form. Following on from 2019’s Exodus, the team is set to release its long-awaited sequel Metro 2039 early next year. In anticipation of this, the first two games – Metro 2033 and Last Light – have been confirmed to be getting free ‘next-gen’ updates this month.

Making the announcement via a press release, Metro publisher DeepSilver confirmed that the first two entries in the series (2010’s Metro 2033 and 2013’s Last Light) will be receiving free next-gen updates – coming to PC on the 22nd of October followed by current-gen consoles on the 29th.

Described as neither “a full remaster or remake” the update will introduce a ton of improvements regardless, including but not limited to:

  • Native PS5 and Series X|S applications
  • 4K textures
  • Improved animation fidelity
  • Higher-quality audio
  • Richer environmental detail
  • PSSR support on PS5 Pro
  • Visual and Performance modes [4K 60fps / upscaled 4K 120fps]
  • Higher quality lighting, shadows and particle effects
  • DualSense Adaptive Trigger support
  • Quality-of-life improvements

According to the team, this is but “a taste” of the full suite of changes and improvements, with official patch notes covering “all technical improvements and platform-specific features” arriving alongside the update’s launch later this month.

The Metro Redux duology was already a remaster of sorts, having been released back in 2014 for the PS4 and Xbox One (improving upon the PS3 and X360 originals). Given this fact, it is encouraging to see that this latest, arguably-bigger, enhancement is being offered for free.
