The 12GB RTX 3080 could be announced tomorrow

We've heard a ton of rumours about Nvidia updating the RTX 3080 with 12GB VRAM, but so far nothing has ever been officially confirmed. That could change soon though, as rumours point to January 11th as the announcement date for this new(ish) graphics card.

According to Wccftech, Nvidia will unveil the GeForce RTX 3080 12GB graphics card on January 11th at 6:00 AM PST (2:00 PM GMT). Although this is a refreshed RTX 3080, Nvidia is apparently avoiding using the “Super” naming scheme. Instead, we are simply expecting this GPU to be denoted as the ‘RTX 3080 (12GB)' to distinguish it from the original RTX 3080.

As the name implies, the refreshed RTX 3080 offers an extra 2GB VRAM over the OG model, accompanied by a wider 384-bit memory bus, a substantial increase from the 320-bit bus found on the RTX 3080 10GB. The number of CUDA cores enabled is also reportedly increasing, from 8704 up to 8960. These changes are expected to result in a higher TDP, up to around 350W.

Although Nvidia plans to introduce the RTX 3080 12GB on January 11th, the card's release date is still a mystery. Hopefully we will have more details come tomorrow.

KitGuru says: When Nvidia first announced the RTX 30 series, a lot of people said that they would rather wait for a refreshed/Super variant of the RTX 3080 with more VRAM. It seems that it's finally coming, but considering the ongoing chip shortage, would the wait have been worth it?
