Mario Kart Tour is an interesting title. First released back in 2019, the free-to-play mobile exclusive from Nintendo launched with a plethora of compromises, but a great deal of interest – amassing well over 100 million downloads in its first month. Over the years, the game had been improved upon greatly, becoming the single-most content rich entry in the whole franchise. Unfortunately the entire game and its years worth of additions are now lost to the ether, with Mario Kart Tour having officially shut down.
Back in July, Nintendo announced that they would be taking Mario Kart Tour offline permanently, confirming that “service for the Mario Kart Tour game for smart devices will come to an end as of 11:00 p.m. Pacific on September 29.”
The day of its reckoning has now arrived, with Mario Kart Tour officially no longer playable in any capacity. As mentioned, Mario Kart Tour is an interesting title. Released during the drought following MK8 Deluxe, the game was barebones in many ways, featuring limited controls while not even allowing for landscape play.
Over the years however, the game changed quite a bit, with Nintendo adding tons of new tracks, characters, skins and more – all the while getting rid of some of its more predatory practices. A good number of original tracks made for Tour would even wind up being added to MK8 Deluxe as part of the game’s Booster Course Pass.
Even so, MK Tour still featured boatloads of original and exclusive content ranging from tracks to characters, skins, variants and more – all of which is now lost forever.
While it’s possible that the game might receive a separate ‘offline’ version later down the line (as was the case with Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp), Nintendo has confirmed that no such thing is “scheduled for release” and so it unfortunately does not seem to be happening.
