SSD expansion, 3D audio updates and more come to PS5

Previously we reported that the PS5 was getting a whole set of new and promised features via a beta update. Following this beta period, the update is now being sent out to all PS5 users, allowing you to increase storage via M.2 SSD, bringing enhanced audio for TV speakers and a whole lot more.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, the Senior Vice President of Platform Experience – Hideaki Nishino – said “we’re pleased to launch our second major PS5 system software update to all PS5 owners globally. The update includes a variety of enhancements to the PS5 console experience as well as 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers.”

With that, the full list of changes and additions include:

  • Control Center customisation
  • Enhanced Game Base
  • Game Library and Home Screen updates
  • Screen Reader controls
  • PlayStation Now resolution selector and connection test tool
  • New Accolade Type: “Leader”
  • Automatic capture of “personal best” videos
  • New Trophy tracker
  • 3D Audio Support for Built-In TV Speakers
  • M.2 SSD Storage Expansion
  • PS Remote Play App and PS App Enhancements

Of these new features, the biggest addition is without any doubt the ability to increase the console’s storage via an added M.2 SSD. Currently, these storage devices are rather expensive, however over time it will likely reduce in price, allowing users to download and install even more games. Fortunately, thanks to the PS5’s compression system, many next-gen games are much smaller in file size when compared to the Series X, meaning that a 1TB SSD can go even further.

Other notable additions include the Control Center customisation (which will let you organise the list of quickly accessible options to your liking) as well as the 3D audio for TV speakers – though we will have to see just how game changing that actually ends up being. All in all, this update brings with it many desired improvements, making the PS5’s UX much more refined. The full blogpost can be found HERE.
