Researchers claim PlayStationVR to cost between $400-$600

There has been a lot of talk surrounding the price of virtual reality this week after the Oculus Rift officially went up for pre-order with an unexpected $599.99 price tag. However, we still have two more virtual reality headsets to launch this year, one of them being the PlayStatioonVR, which researchers say will cost anywhere between $400 and $600.

This estimate comes from the research group, SuperData and it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch. We know that the PlayStation VR is set to feature a 1080p panel running at a refresh rate of up to 120Hz but in order for the PS4 to pump out that many frames, the headset will also be coming with an additional ‘processing box', which is a hardware add-on to bring more power to the console.

As Gamespot points out, PlayStation executive, Andrew House, once said that the PSVR will be priced like a new gaming platform, hinting that it may cost as much as a new generation console, which in this case would be around the $400 mark.

Right now, the PlayStationVR is pretty much ready to go but Sony has admitted that it is holding off to give developers more time to develop titles for the headset before launching. The headset will likely launch in the second half of the year, which means we may see a price and release date at E3 this year, if not slightly earlier.

KitGuru Says: While the Oculus Rift is going to be an expensive buy and reserved for high-end PC owners, the PlayStationVR has a unique opportunity to cater to even more people due to the high number of PS4 sales and potential for a lower price point.
