WD Red SN700 1TB NVMe SSD Review

The WD Red SN700 comes in a smallish box with a clear image of the drive on the front. Under the image is a line of text highlighting the fact that the drive is built for NAS caching and storage duties. The 3,400MB/s Sequential read figure is displayed under this along with an icon displaying the fact that the drive is supported by a 5-year warranty.

The rear of the box has a small clear plastic panel through which part of the drive is visible, sitting in its protective plastic enclosure. The only other thing in the box is a Technical Support and Warranty Guide.

WD’s 1TB Red SN700 is a single-sided PCB design, so the rear of the drive is empty.

Under the product label sit the in-house WD controller (labelled SanDisk 20-82-00705-A2), two 512GB 3D TLC NAND (labelled SanDisk 009537 512) packages and a Micron DDR4 cache IC. At the time of writing this review, WD hasn't released any detailed information about the controller or the NAND that the Red SN700 uses.

WD’s SSD management utility goes under the name of SSD Dashboard. With it, you can monitor drive status, performance, update firmware and monitor temperatures. There’s no cloning tool integrated into the utility but you can download Acronis True Image WD Edition from the WD website. There is also an option to change the layout to a dark mode.
