Tomb Raider received much acclaim from critics, who praised the graphics, the gameplay and Camilla Luddington’s performance as Lara with many critics agreeing that the game is a solid and much needed reboot of the franchise. Much criticism went to the addition of the multiplayer which many felt was unnecessary. Tomb Raider went on to sell one million copies in forty-eight hours of its release, and has sold 3.4 million copies worldwide so far.

The tests were performed in a controlled air conditioned room with temperatures maintained at a constant 23c – a comfortable environment for the majority of people reading this. Idle temperatures were measured after sitting at the desktop for 30 minutes. Load measurements were acquired by playing Tomb Raider 2014 for 60 minutes and measuring the peak temperature.
temps
The system runs cool, even under extended load conditions. The Corsair Carbide 540 Air has been proven to deal well with hot running components thanks to the high airflow design.
Ambient noise in the room is around 20-25dBa. We measure from a distance of around 1,5 meters from the closed chassis and 4 foot from the ground to mirror a real world situation.

We use a calibrated meter.

KitGuru noise guide
10dBA – Normal Breathing/Rustling Leaves
20-25dBA – Whisper

noise
The system when idle, is very quiet.

Under general gaming load demands, the fans spin up to remove heat. Noise levels when gaming are not too intrusive, although you will clearly hear the system running.

Taxing the system with Prime and Furmark simultaneously pushes the cooling system to the limits and noise levels rise to 41.2dBa. This is rather intrusive, but not truly realistic of a real world situation we could replicate.
We test power consumption at the socket with a calibrated meter under the following conditions.

1: when idle
2: running Tomb Raider at Ultra HD 4K with ‘ultimate’ image quality settings.

The monitor is not included in the power draw – just the demand via the system power supply.
power
The AMD R9 295X2 consumes a lot of power and Tomb Raider is one of the most demanding games you can run. Total load is 702 watts.
We covered the X99 launch at the end of August, focusing on Intel's flagship 8 core i7 5960x processor at the time. There is no doubt that the X99 platform offers immense levels of performance – albeit at a price premium. Negatively, there are also still some teething issues behind the scenes, as motherboard partners develop and try to stabilise BIOS configurations.

PCSpecialist have adopted the Asus X99-S motherboard in their Predator X99 System. This demonstrated to be rock stable throughout our testing this week – even with a substantial out of the box overclock on the processor, to 4.4ghz. At this clock speed, the Core i7 5820k is a formidable processor able to not only deal with the latest Direct X 11 game engines at 4K, but 3D rendering duties and high definition video editing.

The exemplary performance of the i7 5820k processor is backed up by 16GB of 2,400mhz DDR4 memory which manages to deliver around 46GB/s of bandwidth. Personally, I would have liked to see this system equipped with 2,800mhz or 3,000mhz DDR4 memory, and perhaps PCSpecialist will offer these configurations on special request.

PCSpecialist have outfitted the X99 Predator system to be a force for Ultra HD 4k gaming. In this regard the AMD R9 295X2 is the best first choice. Including two R9 290X cards in Crossfire wouldn't have been quite so elegant a solution, due to rising noise levels and heat emissions. The watercooled R9 295X2 is the most powerful graphics card that money can buy and performance is not lacking in any regard.

Build quality is very good, and all the cables are carefully routed out of the way behind the motherboard plate. The Corsair Carbide Air 540 is a perfect choice for a system build such as this – as there is plenty of airflow and physical space to hide away cables from sight.

Any system with an R9 295X2 in the mix will demand a lot of +12V juice, and thankfully PCSpecialist have opted for the Corsair RM 1000 watt power supply. We measured peak power demand around 700 watts, so the power supply will be running at 70% power demand during the most intensive situations.

We admire the attention to the smaller details. As we would expect PCSpecialist have installed a large 240GB Solid State Drive for operating system/boot duties, however they have opted for a hybrid 2TB Seagate SSHD drive for primary stories duties. I can't say I am completely sold on these hybrid solid state/mechanical drives, but they do perform to a high level and it didn't seem to cause any issues handling all our STEAM games and benchmark files.

We feel the PCSpecialist Predator X99 System is deserving of the MUST HAVE award. We do present the award with a caveat however. If you are only using this system for gaming duties, then you may be better speaking to PCSPECIALIST and getting an overclocked 4790k/R9 295X2 system instead – you will save hundreds of pounds. The X99 platform can certainly handle 4K gaming duties, however it is a much better proposition if you want to use the system for a myriad of duties including 3D rendering and video encoding.

You can buy direct from PCSPECIALIST at this link for £2,299 inc vat.

Pros:

  • extremely powerful.
  • 4K gaming powerhouse.
  • fine selection of components.
  • Asus motherboard is rock solid.
  • overclocked i7 5820K is ideal for more serious duties.

Cons:

  • For a purist gamer, best saving some money and getting a 4790k based build.

Kitguru says: The Predator X99 is built to very high standards and designed for a myriad of duties including 4K gaming and bandwidth intensive editing.

Crimson Desert climbs up to ‘very positive’ score on Steam across over 100k reviews

Crimson Desert was a hotly-anticipated brand new IP prior to its official launch earlier this month, with the ambitious open-world title garnering a ton of attention thanks to its pretty visuals, freeform gameplay and player agency. Upon its launch however, the game suffered from a number of issues, including rather awkward controls. Fortunately, the team at Pearl Abyss have been quick to respond to criticisms – with Crimson Desert having now climbed its way to a ‘Very Positive’ score on Steam.

not sure on value for money but labour costing nearly 425 pounds seems excessive

You will always be able to home build a system for less than a company will sell you one pre-assembled as they are in it to run a business rather than a charity. You also forgot to add in the cost of the OS and thermal compound which brings the current price up to £1951.77
(http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/r9ZwCJ) which is only £226 different from the latest price on the PCSpecialist website of £2178.

I previously bought a laptop from PC Specialist and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again as their service we exemplary. When you consider the price includes with three years warranty, assembly, OS and driver installation and then the system is thoroughly tested before dispatch the £226 difference seems quite reasonable to me.

  3. agreed you can buy them cheaper as parts but labour and parts for that much is excessive

  5. Just finished a new X99 build. System consisted of:

    Motherboard:Asus X99-Deluxe motherboard
    CPU:. Intel i7-5820K,
Memory: 32 GB CORSAIR Vengeance LPX Black (CMK32GX4M4A2800C16)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110i water cooler
Boot Drive: ADATA M.2 512 GB SSD
Storage: WD Black SATA III 3TB
    Powersupply: Hitec 850W
    Case: Corsair Obsidian 550D
    Optical drive: LG BH16NS40
    OS: Windows 8.1 PRO 64
Total cost in Switzerland about CHF 2250 (GBP 1440)

This system really screams !!! Using the ASUS AI Overclocking utility, maximum overclock achieved was
4.7 GHZ with all cores synched (BCLK=100 x 47 multiplier), memory settings set
to XMP, core CPU voltage @1.3V, input [email protected]. Temperatures stayed below
60 degrees Celsius, running Prime 95 for 6 hours. I was lucky and I hope you guys can get as good an overclock capable cpu/mobo combination.
